A 12-year-old boy driving a stolen Hyundai ran a red light Monday and slammed into another car at 27th Street and Lisbon Avenue, police said. Surveillance video obtained by WISN 12 News shows the crash and then, seconds later, the boy could be seen running from the stolen vehicle, trying to escape. “We need safer streets and parents to stay on their kids. Understanding them to better them, not have them out here running the streets, putting people’s lives in jeopardy,” said Tee Allen, who lives nearby.Allen said young people making off with the easy-to-steal Hyundai and Kia models is well known in Milwaukee, but he was shocked to hear the driver in this case was just 12. On the plus side, he said, the boy is so young there’s still time to turn things around.”Put ’em in youth programs so they can understand there’s everything bigger in life than stealing cars,” Allen said. After the 12-year-old boy ran from the crash scene, he was arrested just a few blocks away by Milwaukee police. Police said he boarded a Milwaukee County bus but was spotted, and police pulled the bus over at 20th and Vliet streets. Officers boarded the bus and arrested the boy.”I feel like they need to take these kids and make them accountable for what they do,” said Janee Nix, who lives nearby.Nix said she’s glad no one was hurt in this crash but fears it’s only a matter of time.”I just feel like people are not really taking care of their kids like they’re supposed to. And they need to get ahold of their kids because that boy could’ve died,” Nix said. Because of his age, the boy was released to his family, awaiting a hearing in juvenile court. WISN 12 News has learned two other boys, just 13 years old, were arrested Monday night for multiple counts of auto theft and firearms possession. Their cases are unrelated to the 12-year-old involved in the crash.
