Mahindra Thar rescues the mighty XUV700; What went wrong?

The Mahindra XUV700 is one of the most desirable SUVs of modern times, thanks to its excellent value for money proposition, modern powertrain options and a long list of luxurious features and stylish design bits. All these attributes of the XUV700 have made it a popular SUV for urban usage. When it comes to taking the XUV700 on the roads less travelled, or the lack of them, it still isn’t as flawless as a traditional four-wheel-drive SUV, something like its own stablemate, the Mahindra Thar.

We have come across a video from the YouTube channel ‘Explore The Unseen 2.0’, in which a red-coloured front-wheel-drive Mahindra XUV 700 gets royally stuck in the shallow waters of a pond while it was attempting to cross the water. This deliberate attempt was done to test whether the front-wheel-drive system and high ground clearance of the XUV700 are enough to make it capable of crossing the shallow waters of a pond.

However, the front-wheel-drive XUV700 gets stuck as soon as it enters the pond. In an attempt to get out of the situation, the XUV700 aggressively throttles the vehicle, due to which it exhibits tremendous amounts of front wheel spins.

After failed attempts of driving the XUV700 out of the waters, the presenter takes out a towing rope from the boot of his Mahindra Thar Automatic, which has shackles on both ends. The presenter then ties one shackle on the tow hook of the XUV700 and the shackle of the other end in the tow hook of the Thar. The Thar driver then pulled the XUV700 out from the stuck waters while being on the rocky terrain on the banks of the pond.

However, the Mahindra XUV700 driver didn’t stop here and tried again to cross the shallow waters of the pond from one bank to another bank of the pond. This time around, the driver had enough momentum to carry on the pace, and while the XUV700 struggled a lot to find the grip on the surface, it eventually managed to cross the pond.

It should be noted that front-wheel-drive vehicles like the Mahindra XUV700 here do not have the finesse of a four-wheel-drive vehicle like the Mahindra Thar while finding grip and traction on loose surfaces like slush, mud and sand. In a four-wheel-drive vehicle, an optimal amount of power is sent to the rear wheels as well, which helps in enhancing the traction on loose surfaces. However, even in the case of four-wheel-drive vehicles, the right momentum and pace while driving are very much required.
